Bringing Apple's Jobs Back To America

neontommy:

In 2007, a little over a month before the iPhone was scheduled to appear in stores, Mr. Jobs beckoned a handful of lieutenants into an office. For weeks, he had been carrying a prototype of the device in his pocket.

Mr. Jobs angrily held up his iPhone, angling it so everyone could see the dozens of tiny scratches marring its plastic screen, according to someone who attended the meeting. He then pulled his keys from his jeans.

People will carry this phone in their pocket, he said. People also carry their keys in their pocket. “I won’t sell a product that gets scratched,” he said tensely. The only solution was using unscratchable glass instead. “I want a glass screen, and I want it perfect in six weeks.”

Article makes you wonder:

—Would America be better positioned if it could figure out a way to ship things by air more cheaply?

—Is America’s only role at this point to come up with smart ideas? All we do is create concepts and not build things anymore?

—Will all these workers living in dorms abroad ever jump ship?

—Paresh Dave, Neon Tommy

Guinness world record for iPad typing set by 15-year-old | TUAW

chartier:

I like typing on my iPad screen and I’ve been forcing myself to practice and get better at it. After all, while growing up, I always wanted to be able to type like Geordi and Data.

I wrote a few 1000+ word pieces for Macworld on my iPad. The last time I tried a typing speed test on it a few months ago, I hit 59wpm. Admittedly though, that’s with concentrating fairly hard at making sure I hit the on-screen keyboard. On a traditional keyboard I’m in the 115-120wpm range.

On-screen typing is as much of a cultural shift as it is a hardware and software feature. Just takes time.

My speed on a regular keyboard pales in comparison to yours!

Using iPads in the classroom? This site is a one-stop shop.

I Education Apps Review is a community site developed to offer reviews of iPad apps for educators. The kicker? Educators submit the reviews, so everything is community-driven. Certainly worth a look.

Report: In-Game Purchases To Blow Mobile Games Revenues Past $11 Billion By 2015

A new report from Juniper Research forecasts global mobile games revenues to surpass $11 billion by 2015, nearly double what they were in 2009.

All in all, it’s a fairly conservative prediction in my opinion, but what’s interesting is that the research firm also says in-game purchases will overtake the traditional pay-per-download model, with Apple’s in-app billing mechanism leading the way, as the primary source of monetizing mobile games in about two years (by 2013).
